Salt Spray and Salt Fog Testing
The international standard 9227 or better known as ISO 9227 is a corrosion test in artificial atmospheres. There are three variations to this test and they include neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS), and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS). The salt spray tests are particularly useful for detecting defects, pores and discontinuities in metallic, organic, anodic oxide and conversion coating. Neutral salt spray uses 5% sodium chloride solution with a pH range of 6.5 – 7.2 while being atomized under a controlled environment ( similar to an ASTM B117 test method). Acetic acid salt spray uses the same 5% salt solution with the exception of glacial acetic acid to lower the pH range to about 3.1 – 3.3. The copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray or CASS is the third variation of the ISO 9227 salt spray tests. As all three methods are similar with small modifications to each test. CASS is similar to the AASS method by using glacial acetic acid to obtain a pH range from 3.1 – 3.3 but copper chloride is another additive in the solution.
